Tips For Living With Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation, commonly referred to as AFib, is one of the most common heart disorders. Atrial fibrillation is commonly associated with skipping beats and fluttering sensations in the chest due to the misfiring of the signals that are supposed to keep the heart in check. People living with atrial fibrillation face challenges doing some things. Seeking treatment and making some lifestyle changes can make life easier. Atrial fibrillation is a condition you can live a fulfilling life with, and we will be looking at how to ensure this is the case in this article.

The first thing you need to do is become more active physically. Weight control, a stronger heart, and improved sleep are some of the benefits of staying physically active. You should not push your body too hard when exercising, rather maintain a moderate workout plan. Before you get on any workout regimen, ensure that you consult your doctor for advice. Take time and rest if you find yourself losing breath as you exercise.

You also need to watch your diet if you are living with atrial fibrillation. You should ensure that you eat fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and vegetables. You need to limit your caffeine intake since caffeine increases the heart’s rhythm. Foods rich in vitamin K are also encouraged for people living with atrial fibrillation. Consult your doctor if you are using blood thinners because too much of this vitamin is not encouraged when one is on such medication. You also have to eliminate fatty foods from your diet and cut back on alcohol consumption.

Avoid smoking as much as possible if you have atrial fibrillation. There is a high risk of getting a heart attack if you smoke because nicotine damages one’s blood vessels. It can be difficult for one to stop smoking if they have already become addicts. Your doctor will help you if you are unable to quit by either giving you a prescription for medicine to help you stop or recommending a safer nicotine replacement alternative.

Fourthly, you need to control your weight. This is more so if you are overweight or obese since too much weight increases the chances of the condition coming back even after undergoing ablation, which is a procedure that seeks to manage the disorder. Ensure that you eat healthy foods and workout often to reduce the chances of this happening.

Too much stress can trigger your AFib symptoms, and this is why you need to keep stress to a minimum. Try things such as exercise, meditation, yoga, and deep breathing every time you feel anxious. Talking about your stress triggers can also help you control them, which is why you are also encouraged to join a support group or seek help from a therapist.
